Deadpool is a fun, exciting and different style of 'superhero' movie. Straying from the norm, but staying true to the comics, Deadpool is witty, ridiculous and aware of the audience's presence.
The film tells us the origins of Wade Wilson and how he becomes the 'merc with a mouth' anti-hero Deadpool. The way that we are told this story is unconventional, with the film flitting between past and present happenings. Though with many films this tactic might not work, with Deadpool it works incredibly well as it fits with his sporadic manner and thought process. We also get a lot of slow motion throughout the fight scenes, which adds another level to the fights whilst allowing Deadpool to communicate with the audience his thoughts on the matter. The scenes are put together well, with the graphics really enhancing the astounding experience of the film. The whole movie suits the personality of Deadpool, which is why it is such an interesting watch.
The cast is expertly chosen, with Ryan Reynolds rightfully playing as the wayward mercenary. Reynolds seemed straight at home as Wade Wilson, with his witty one-liners and self inflicting jokes. His humour and portrayal of the character is really what enhanced this film, as if he was made for the role of Deadpool. The main villain, Ajax (also referred to as Francis) played by Ed Skrein, is well represented and capable at being a match for our anti-hero. Despite being rather predictable at times, the overall character was not a bad one. Other co-stars include Morena Baccarin as Wade's love interest, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al and Stefan Kapicic and Brianna Hildebrand as the two members of the X-Men. All are strong and independent characters to their own rights, each adding their own piece of charm to the final product. A worthy mention is T.J Miller, who plays the character Weasel. He oozes awkward charm as he becomes an audience favourite through not only his support for Wade but his quirky sense of humour and blatant observations.
Overall, the movie is an enthralling trip that shows us how Deadpool came to be the sarcastic, witty and brutal anti-hero that we have only witnessed before in comics. The special effects and music gel well with the action and the humour of the film. Despite some set backs of a predictable villain, and a technicality from one particular fight scene between relatively-unused character Angel and Colossus, this hilarious, ridiculous film is definitely a must-see for all comic book and film lovers.
